Found Poetry From Night

“Death wrapped itself

around me till I was stifled.

It stuck to me.

I felt that I could touch it.

The idea of dying,

of no longer being,

began to fascinate me.

Not to exist any longer.

Not to feel the

horrible pains in my foot.

Not to feel anything, neither weariness,

nor cold, nor anything.

To break the ranks,

to let oneself slide to the edge of the road….”

6 Passages From Night

Passage 1: “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned into one long night…”

Reaction 1: I felt pity after I read this passage because I know it is a horrible thing to witness the beginning of the extermination of your own kind.

Passage 2: “My God, Lord of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahou’s son has done.”

Reaction 2: While reading this passage from the book I was proud of him. I was proud because Elie didn’t give up on his father and he was being strong for his father.

Passage 3: “My mind was invaded suddenly by this realization-there was no more reason to live, no more reason to struggle.”

Reaction 3: “During this part of the story I was upset and saddened because he felt like he had no reason to live, but he did.

Passage 4: “For the liberating army”, he cried, “So that they’ll realize there men living here and not pigs.”

Reaction 4: While reading this passage I was very happy because the Jews were finally going to be rescued from the camp. I was also happy because the people had finally saw all the terrible things that the Jews had been going through.

Passage 5: “Death wrapped itself around me till I was stifled. It stuck to me.I felt that I could touch it. The idea of dying, of no longer being, began to fascinate me.”

Reaction 5: While reading this I became angered and saddened because he was so close to death, but I didn’t want him to die. I was upset because a part of him wanted to die and to me, it felt like he weren’t going to fight back.

Passage 6: ‘From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared iProxy-Connection: keep-alive

o mine, has never left me.”

Reaction 6: After reading this passage from the book I became sad. I felt this way because he will always be haunted by those memories and will have to deal with a certain part of him being dead, after witnessing many horrible events.

Night Questions Part 2 By: Najeemah S.

1.) Why do you think the Germans chose to hang a few prisoners in public at a time when they are murdering thousands each day in the crematoriums? I think the Germans chose to hang a few prisoners in public to send other prisoners a message and teach them a lesson.

2.) Give examples of the ways Elie’s relationship with his father change throughout the book. What causes those changes? One of the ways that his relationship with his father began to change was when they first arrived at Auschwitz. It was the first time his father got hit and Elie didn’t do anything because he was scared. I think that all the changes in their relationship was caused by fear.

3.) After Elie’s father was chosen for selection, he gives his son a knife and a spoon. Why is this a significant act? What does Elie mean when he says “the inheritance”? I think his father gave Elie the knife and spoon so he can protect himself if he’s in danger.

4.) At the beginning of the book, Elie described himself as someone who believed “profoundly.” How have his experiences at Auschwitz affected his faith? It affected him because he stopped believing in God because he’d been living in a horrible nightmare for awhile.

5.) At one point on the cattle train to Buchenwald, a German workman causes a “stampede” in the wagon. How does he do this? What do his actions suggest about him? What does this incident suggest about the prisoners? The German workman caused a stampede by throwing one piece of bread into the wagon. I think the man did this just to be funny and be entertained by the prisoners. This incident proved that the prisoners was starving and they really would kill to have something to eat.

6.) What conflicts arises in Elie regarding his father? Towards the ending of thProxy-Connection: keep-alive
Cache-Control: max-age=0

story Elie became very upset with his father because he wanted to give up and die, but Elie wouldn’t allow it because without his father he had nothing to live for.

7.) What happens on January 28, 1945? What was Elie’s emotional state at this point? On January 28, 1945 Elie’s father died. At that moment Elie was sad, mad, and scared because he was without his entire family now.

8.) In the next to the last sentence in the book, Elie says that when he looks in the mirror after liberation, he sees a corpse gazing back at him. He ends the book by stating, “The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me.” What does that sentence mean? I think the sentence mean that when he look into the mirror he can see the person he use to be during the Holocaust, and now the image is stuck with him forever.

9.) How has Elie tried to keep you from responding to his story the way his father once responded to the one told by Moshe the Beadle? How successful has he been? He He got us to respond by telling us everything that happened to him and being honest about it. He’s been very successful with getting us to respond to his story.

10.) What is the meaning of the title, Night? If you were to give another title to this book, what would it be and why? In my opinion, the title Night means a nightmare that lasted a very long time. If I had the chance to change the title of the book I wouldn’t because the title fit perfectly.

Night Questions By Najeemah S.

1) How does Elie describe himself? Elie was a profound believer. He studied the Talmud during the day and wept over the destruction of the Temple at night.

2)Who is Moshe the Beadle? Moshe was a very poor man living in Sighet.

3)How did the town respond to Moshe and his stories? The people refused to listen to his stories. They said that he only wanted him to feel pity for him.

4)Why do you think Elie Wiesel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle? I think Elie began Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle because he wanted to tell people about what he did in his childhood and to tell people about what he believed in.

5)Explain how the German soldiers slowly took over Sighet. First, the German soldiers entered the Hungarian area. Three days later they were in Sighet. Then, they made Jews wear the yellow star on all of their clothing. Finally, they built two ghettos for the Jews of Sighet.

6) Explain how Elie’s family was seperated. After Elie and his family arrived at Auschwitz an the women wre told to go to the right and the men to the left. Elie never saw his mom and sister again.

7) Why do you think the Germans take away the inmates’ personal belongings? Their clothing? Why do they cut their hair? Tatto a number on each person’s arm?  I think they did these things just to torture the Jews.

8)What does it mean for a life to be turned into “one long night”? I think it means that someone is going through a really tough and dark time at the moment.

9) Please write a personal reactiion to the novel so far.

The novel Night is a really good story, in my opinion. It’s the first time that I read about the life for someone who survived the Holocust. I’ve learned some new things about the pre-Holocust that I’ve never learned about berfore. For example, I never about the Sighets ghettos. It was very interesting to me. In conclusion, I look forward to reading the rest of the novel.
